Aesthetic Characteristics of
Paper
Color - Warm or cool.
May give the appearance of added image color.
Color affects
the visual quality of the
image, making it more or less readable.
Brightness - Brilliance or
snap of the paper. It may also be thought of
as the whiteness of the paper. The quality of
the brightness affects color balance especially in
four-
color printing.
Thickness - Measure of the
thickness of the paper. Often referred to as
Caliper.
Opacity - Degree of
see-through of the paper. Opacity is greatly
affected by additions.
When paper is printed on both
sides, the opacity of the sheet must be high enough
to prevent see-through.
Texture - Added to the paper
during the finishing process. Examples: Laid,
Linen or
Vellum finish.
Refractiveness - Measure of
light reflected from the paper surface. A
textured paper will have low refraction, while a
cast-coated paper will reflect most light.
